The DI program in Long Beach Unified School District was started twenty-five years ago and has deep roots. Keller Middle School is the only middle school (grades 6-8) to offer the continuation of the school district's K-5 DI option.  Dual immersion involves learning in two languages, in this case, Spanish and English. Ideally, classrooms consist of about half and half first-language English speakers and first-language Spanish speakers. DI is not merely a Spanish class or two added to the curriculum. Core subjects and electives are taught in English and Spanish resulting in students achieving high levels of bilingualism and bi-literacy. DI students also demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors towards other cultures.

El programa DI en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Long Beach se inició hace veinticinco años y tiene raíces profundas. La Escuela Intermedia Keller es la única escuela intermedia (grados 6-8) que ofrece la continuación de la opción K-5 DI del distrito escolar. La inmersión dual implica el aprendizaje en dos idiomas, en este caso, español e inglés. Idealmente, las aulas consisten en aproximadamente mitad y mitad de hablantes de inglés como primer idioma y hablantes de español como primer idioma. DI no es simplemente una o dos clases de español agregadas al plan de estudios. Las materias básicas y optativas se imparten en inglés y español, lo que da como resultado que los estudiantes alcancen altos niveles de bilingüismo y alfabetización bilingüe. Los estudiantes de DI también demuestran actitudes y comportamientos positivos hacia otras culturas.
